What you like and consume, whether in terms of media and entertainment or music and the arts in general, says a lot about what kind of person you are. This is true even in the wall art you install or use at home. Wall art, after all, is art—a distillation of your aesthetic and artistic preferences. And your preference dictates who you are. It’s not surprising that research shows your type or reference in art is actually dictated by or is correlated to your personality. More than your gender or age, your personality decides what kind of art (and, in effect, personalized wall art) you like.
People often describe themselves as introverts or extroverts. But in reality, human beings are more complex than that. A new model suggests that people can be categorized based on five core traits: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. But in this model, you are not just one type or trait: rather, you have all of these traits, although one is more dominant than the other.
The study suggests that If you like art in general, it can be said that one of your core traits is openness. However, if you don’t like art, the study says that you are conscientious. Looking at the decors you use at home, then, can be an indicator of your core trait. Do you lean towards more creative wall art? Or do you like more utilitarian, practical decors? This could answer if you are more open or more conscientious.
Personality types
Another way to look at this is through the personality types or the Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicator. This is an indicator you can take yourself to see what kind of specific personality you are. There are, all in all, 14 personality types based on this—from The Thinker to The Mastermind, and everything in between.
Looking at the personalized wall art you like can reveal your Myers-Briggs type. On the flipside of this, you can use the Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicator to determine what wall art you should get for your home.
For instance, a person who follows under the classification of The Thinker, supposedly the most logical among all the types, will lean towards personalized wall art that has geometric designs as this appeals best to their sensibilities. Meanwhile, a Composer, a person who is supposed to be spontaneous, will most likely enjoy art that shows a sense of adventure, so wall art that is travel-inspired may suit them best. A Nurturer is known to be generous, and as such will like soothing wall art with floral designs and pastel colors. A Doer is action-oriented; contemporary art or wall art with big, bright colors may fit their taste.
But, in the end, all of this is arbitrary. While your personalized wall art can reveal a lot about you, don’t let this dictate your interior design choice. Choose what you think fits your home or room, regardless of your personality.
